Whatsapp CEO Jan Koum on hitting 500 million users

What’s the company going to do to celebrate? We’re going to get our engineers together and fix a lot of bugs. We don’t have anything huge we’ve changed in our last six months, but we’ve had probably 1,000 little bug fixes and improvements.

I worry about how to offer a competitive set of features without making the UI difficult, the user experience worse, the application bloated. These screens are small. There’s a limited amount of memory and bandwidth. It’s just all about focus.

There’s not enough money and not enough celebrities in the world to convince people to use a shitty product. People are so savvy these days. People expect a good user experience.

Enough said.

Nike fires majority of FuelBand team, will stop making wearable hardware ?

Nike is gearing up to shutter its wearable-hardware efforts, and the sportswear company this week fired the majority of the team responsible for the development of its FuelBand fitness tracker
“Partnering with industry-leading tech companies is nothing new for Nike,” Nike’s Strong said. “We have been working with Apple to develop products since 2006″

No shit Sherlock.

Galaxy Gear – Worth it?

Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch has got yet another price cut and will now retail at Rs 14,990. This is the second such price cut in a month, after Samsung slashed prices of the smartwatch from Rs 22,990 to Rs 19,075.

Lenovo – The Journey so far.

We started in the wonderful city of Bengaluru.

Then moved to the city of joy – Kolkata

Then finally landed up in Patna and travelled across Bihar. View from my balcony (below)

Just another day on the busy roads of Patna

Fancy some Lemon Tea? – The best I’ve tasted so far!1484180_10152044462230873_1710140531_n

Ingredients: Black salt, Hajmola (yes you read it right), lemon juice and boiled tea water.

And when you’re feeling bored of selling laptops you’ve got some really great movies to watch.

So far Patna has been great to me. It has taught me in the 3 months so far what a 2 year Management course at SIBM Pune couldn’t!

This post will be updated as and when the author stumbles upon something new to share!

Understanding Google

An excellent article by Ben Thompson on why Google is focusing less on Android and why Chrome is the focal point of all future developments.

Dear Notion Ink

I was there last time –All the time.

When the first prototype of Adam was delivered, when we toppled Oprah’s blog as the most read blog on the eve of pre-orders being launched.  When the Weather UI mockups were released. I saw it all.

The crescendo and the fall after that.

Every now and then I visited the blog hoping for a new post. Gradually the frequency reduced because there was no content coming up. In a way I was happy, Rohan and team were not revealing their cards.

Last year, they did some real innovation in terms of both Hardware and Software, their UI was way way ahead of the Touchwiz and the Sense UI’s that prevailed back then. They launched. They failed. Others conquered. The big guns clearly made the most of this failure, including making changes in design and UI clearly inspired by that of Adam’s. In a way it was a victory but the fanboy in me was sad. Sad for the fact that this victory could have been that of Notion Ink.

Fast forward to 2013. We’re seeing leaks again of the new Adam II with a side screen for notifications and all. Rohan, I request you not to reveal any features till you’re ready to ship. I do not want anymore “Over promise and under deliver” accusations neither do I want other companies to get inspired from the Adam and implement new features and ship products before you guys can. I want Adam to be a success. I want it to disrupt the “upgrade tech specs and get a new version” tablet market.

I want it to be the change. And young padawan the force is strong with this one.

All the love, hope and expectations

– Adam FanBoy!

Letter from Taliban to Malala Yousafzai

The other side of the table. Some noteworthy content.

I am writing to you in my personal capacity this may not be the opinion or policy of Tehreek e Taliban Pakistan or other jihadi faction or group.

Let’s begin

Taliban never attacked you because of going to school or you were  education lover, also please mind that Taliban or Mujahideen are not against the education of any men or women or girl. Taliban believe that you were intentionally writing against them and running a smearing campaign to malign their efforts to establish Islamic system in swat and your writings were provocative.

Is promoting education and encouraging people to pursue education a smearing campaign against Taliban?

Now to explain you the second point, why Taliban are blowing up schools? The answer to this
questions in that not only Taliban in KPK or FATA are blowing up the schools but Pakistan
Army and Frontier Constabulary is equally involved in this issue.

Still doesn’t justify why Taliban is blowing up schools. Just because one person is a jackass doesn’t mean you acting like one will be justified.

The reason for this action is common between them that is turning of schools into hide outs and transit camps once it comes under control of either party Pakistan Army or Taliban.

No words.

Dozens of schools and colleges are being used by Pakistan Army and FC as their barracks in FATA, you can find out easily if you like. So when something sacred is turned lethal it needs to
be eliminated this is the policy of Taliban.

So when something sacred (read: quran and Islam as a religion) is turned lethal (provocating people to take innocent lives) it needs to be eliminated. Do we agree that USA is following the same policy as well then?
He then goes on to sing praises for how the Indian subcontinent was full of riches and how all the kings spent huge amounts of money on education, how Indians taught the Britishers Hindi, Urdu and Persian and then comes to this

No poverty, no crises and no clashes of civilization or religion. Because the education system was based on noble thoughts and noble curriculum.

From the history that I was taught till my class 10th:
Poverty – Yes
Crises – Every now and then
Clash of civilizations – Let’s not even get started
Clashes of religion – Other than Akbar’s reign and before Babar invaded India – Yes

Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, the founder and symbol of English education in India was a freemasons.

Here’s what his Wikipedia page reads:
” During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, he remained loyal to the British and was noted for his actions in saving European lives.”…”Sir Syed was suspicious of the Indian independence movement and called upon Muslims to loyally serve the British Raj.”

And then he starts making some sense –

You say Malala day is not your day it is the day of every person who has raised voice for their rights, I ask you why such a day in not assigned to Rachel Corrie, only because the bulldozer was Israeli? Why such a day in not assigned to Affia Siddique because the buyers are Americans? Why such day is not assigned to Faizan and Faheem because the killer was Raymond Davis? Why such a day in not assigned to those 16 innocent afghan women and children who were shot dead by an American Robert Belas because he was not a talib.

Valid arguments. One simple excuse – The US of A strong arming the other party. Every.Single.Time.

I ask you and be honest in reply, if you were shot but Americans in a drone attack, would world have ever heard updates on your medical status? Would you be called ‘daughter of the nation? Would the media make a fuss about you? Would General Kiyani have come to visit you and would the world media be constantly reporting on you? Would you were called to UN? Would a Malala day be announced?

NO. And it’s a shame!

I wish, the compassion you learnt from Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him should be learnt
by Pakistan Army so they could stop shedding of Muslim blood in FATA and Baluchistan. I wish, the compassion you learnt from Prophet Jesus should be learnt by USA and NATO so they should stop shedding blood of innocent Muslims across the world and I wish the same for followers of Buddha to stop killing of innocent unarmed Muslims in Burma, and Sri Lanka and wish the same for Indian army to follow Gandhi jee and stop genocide in Kashmir

Amen to that!
P.S: How about you ask Lashkar to stop gate-crashing our borders?

The followers of bacha khan, the ANP has an example of non-violence in their five years regime in KPK province, for example Swat, where a single shot was not fired and we witnessed the followers of bacha khan implemented the philosophy of nonviolence in its true soul, with support of jets, tanks and gunships.

Here’s an interesting piece on the elections held in pakistan recently –
“Because of the massive violence directed at them by the terrorist Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP — known as the Pakistani Taliban) during the elections and before, three major political parties were unable to campaign. These included the Pakistan People’s Party which was ruling as the central government before the elections, the Awami National Party (ANP)  More than 100 people were killed during the election campaigns, including several electoral candidates, and 350 injured mainly by the TTP. “
This is the same ANP which is mentioned in the letter. The same non violent ANP which was targeted by Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan and thus was unable to contest in elections.

I advise you to come back home, adopt the Islamic and pushtoon culture, join any female Islamic madrassa near your home town, study and learn the book of Allah, use your pen for Islam and plight of Muslim ummah and reveal the conspiracy of tiny elite who want to enslave the whole humanity for their evil agendas in the name of new world order.

Home – I believe even she wants to but why she can not – the answer lies within!
